Description

Context and Project Goal

Routine cognitive screenings for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias are still limited in the U.S. Many patients often rely on healthcare providers to initiate these evaluations, but there is a shortage or primary care doctors in the country. To bridge this gap, Avant Institute implemented a standardized screening assessment program within local community pharmacies across the United States.

Project Description

Twenty-seven pharmacies from the Community Pharmacy Enhanced Services Network (CPESN) across rural, urban, and underserved communities were selected to participate. These pharmacies received training and implemented Cognivue Clarity, a self-administered 10-minute cognitive screening tool, for adults aged 65 and older. Patients with test results indicating cognitive decline were referred to primary care for further evaluation.

Impact

Among the 425 patients screened, 343 (80.7%) reported this was their first-time cognitive assessment. Of the total screened patients, 312 (73.4%) had scores outside the normal range. Finally, participating pharmacies attributed the success of the project to three main factors: The strong patient-pharmacist relationship already established, the ease of use of the cognitive screening tool, and the education and training course they received by the project.
